Just wondering from folks, with the recent rise in food costs, which I'm certain will only continue to rise....would anyone be interested in creating a local food co-op organization?

What I mean by this is, several families or individuals take care of their own food garden, each growing a variety of things. Family A would be growing a few different items than Family B. Family A and Family B would trade with each other the items the other one didn't have, and so on to to make each family have a wide variety of food to eat each week.

Of course it would take a few years to get a really good system in place, and a bunch of folks totally on board to do this, but I really feel with the rising costs of food and fuel, we need to start looking in this direction. Bananas are going to be $5/pound before we know it!

Bicycle forks

Saturday Fire cannons & BBQ

Come for a BBQ in the Rec park and a trial run of the Berzerker Saturday evening about 7-ish.
BYO stuff to BBQ and something to share. We'll fire up the coals and then fire up the trike. (hopefully the authorities don't show up)
We're going to trailer up the trike at my house about 6 (anyone is welcome to stop by and help load it up) and then take it over to the Park hill office Building parking lot at 500 Auburn Folsom Rd.

For all you Foothill folk who might not have heard otherwise, we having our first bash at the new place and you are all invited. Here is the original invitation and details:

It has officially become time to unveil the shop, open the doors, welcome in all of our friends old and new.

Our new place sits on 1/2 acre with plenty of room to be festive, camp, spin fire, have fun, listen to Jay play the guitar or Red Bone spin some tunes or whatever. So here is how it will work:

All are welcome to camp overnight. Bring a motorhome or a tent or a car or sleep on the ground, there are showers, toilets and plenty of room. Even the consistency of the dusty yard is strikingly similar to playa dust!

The party festivities will begin around 7:00 pm with a barbecue, food, drink, and relaxing in the afternoon sun. As night opens up we will party Inspiratum style. For those of you who have been there you know that this means great people, a little bit of craziness, and maybe some fire here and there.

Early in the day we will be rafting! Yes, rafting... We are very close to the American River and we will drive everyone down to the river rafting rental place, rent rafts, load them up and float down the river. This will cost about $20 per person for the raft rental and the bus ride home. The cool thing about this is that you don't have to carry any gear home! If you have your own floaty and can arrange a ride back, that is cool too and even cheaper!

Once we get back, you can pitch camp, chill out, run around naked or whatever strikes your fancy while we gear up for a barbecue... then begins the party.

Camp Inspiratum is hosting this party at the same location where we hold our Laboratorium nights. This is where we open the shop for projects, camaraderie, and soaking up some inspiration. During the day this shop functions as the home of Autoshield and also as the world's headquarters for Public Safety Innovation. Our gift to the community is this party; we are passing this information around by word of mouth because we find that is the best way to get the best group of people together. While everyone is welcome, we do ask that you invite those who you know (burners, coworkers, family, friends, stalkers, admirers) and help us to keep this party crazy fun and still a little bit down to earth.

Ride Share To SF Memorial Day Weekend

I will be going to San Francisco this Friday the 23rd almost right after work. I get off at 3:30 pm Then will go home and shower then leave. It takes about 2.5 hours give or take, depending on traffic and aliens. Hopefully I will be landing in the city around 7pm. Departure time is 6pm Monday the 26th. I have to work at 7am on Tuesday. Depending on the circumstance, times can be flexible.

I have an 85 Toyota Pickup that is real cheap. Its comfy enough if you are not too picky. It does not have AC, but the windows go down. The speakers are crap, but work and I can listen to Radio/CD/ipod, or we can sing. The cab is pretty small. I have bungie cords and rope. All in all it runs and gets the job done.

If you have the time off/can make the time/were thinking about going to the bay area, I would be glad to give you a ride and we can split the gas. I have a lot of plans, so this is sort of a drop off/pick up deal. Of course, things always change. I am a real chill down to earth nice guy. Since I may be giving a ride to a complete stranger, we have to meet before, which can only happen on Thursday evening. Sending a well written email will help. It also helps to send a link to a profile on myspace, tribe, facebook, etc. You know how to contact me.

Trinity Alps Camping Trip!!!

Memorial Day weekend is upon us, and there are a few of us burners up here that are heading up to the Trinity Alps for some car camping, hiking......the *****campsite is right next to the creek! I camped there last year and had a blast!!! and I'm pretty certain we're planning on staying thru memorial day!

I know its kindof a haul......but well worth it if anyone wants to come. keepin the location a secret since it fills up quick....if you are interested in camping with us - let me know and I'll get all the info to you!

for the support at the California Club last night 5/1 ,It was a good night -with Blue Turtle Seduction- and for such short notice and a special thanks to Kimbuck for letting me hook this up :)
I am looking at bringing other National and Regional acts in many different musical styles to the area so i'll keep you informed as soon word comes down.........
and the band (BTS) was impressed too. and enjoyed the energy bigtime and said they would love to play again . so look for a date in the late summer or fall
It was so cool to met a few of you and would like to meet the rest of ya'll somewhere down the road or at a show/festival

Not really, just heads up that a crew of us are coming down to the California Club on Thurs. to see our favorite band Blue Turtle Seduction play.
My friend booked this show out of the "blue", short notice......Im a little frusterated because it gave us no time to give heads up or make plans. When they play Nevada City, we really work up a crowd. This is going to be a fun experiment though!

Even if you might think these guys arent your thing, I suggest coming down to old town if you got a Spring fever setting in, and see what the ruckus is about. These guys have come a long way in a short time. They are highly danceable and have a very unique almost undescribable sound. They are from Tahoe and tour nationally now. They are not bluegrass, if you have preconceived that notion. They are more rock and roll w/a fiddle, fast european jig like craziness, with great melodies and memorable songs.

Hi All,

I was fortunate enough to meet a few of you the other night at Yuri's Night here in Reno! You seem interested in knowing what the happenings are up here as far as BM goes, so I am here to let you all in on just that!

I regularly post to the local tribes when we have upcoming events. I usually do it a week or so before the event, but you all may need more time, just cuz you will probably wanna spend the night, cuz we throw some ROCKIN parties!!! ;p

I am a member of Controlled Burn, Reno's local fire performance group, but I am also heavily involved in planning a lot of the fundraisers and BM parties here.

If you don't mind the occasional press release as to what's going on here, I would love to post, and see and meet some of you more often!

I will start by posting the next party/fundraiser we are having in Reno THIS weekend in my next thread.

Reno, NV The Shiva Vista Project is proud to present its third fundraiser, “Triple Trouble Spring Madness” on April 19th beginning at 4pm. This triple party will be held at the Zephyr Lounge located at 1074 S. Virginia Street in Reno. While raising funds for the Shiva Vista Project, this event will also celebrate the Jub Jub Camp with its usual Monkey Business and the Canon twins' 30th birthday and, as everyone has been so patiently awaiting...FIRE!!! It also happens to fall just prior to what some consider an international holiday: April 20th. Third fundraiser, three parties in one, and all things happen in threes. You don’t have to be a Burning Man attendee (referred to as “Burners”) to attend. Everyone age 21 and up is invited to attend Triple Trouble Spring Madness. Admission is $10 in advance. Advance tickets are available at the Melting Pot- 888 S. Virginia St. in Reno, and at Prism Magic- 2161 Pyramid Hwy. in Sparks. Tickets are $15 at the door (to include food), available at the Zephyr Lounge beginning 4:00 p.m. April 19.

Playa Fashion attire and costumes are highly encouraged. The theme for Triple Trouble Spring Madness is tribal and earthy. This event will include live music from local bands Nick Ramirez and Astronot, Sleepy Sunshine, Buster Blue, and Session. There will also be BBQing, included with admission, and poi spinning workshops (available at $10 extra per session). As the sun sets, Controlled Burn has donated their time to light up the evening with some tribal fire spinning and live drums with our local drummer community. Once you're revved up and ready to dance the night away, DJ Rhino is hosting the official after party, The GREEN Party to be held at the 1099 Club located at 1099 S. Virginia Street in Reno. Admission for this party is free to all that have attended the Triple Trouble Spring Madness party at the Zephyr Lounge.

“I am so greatful to the community for all of the support it has shown thus far,” states Ryan Ostler, the creative force behind the project. “It is nice to include a few other groups and a more tribal feel to this fundraiser. This would be a perfect opportunity to get a sweet rug for your space if you are so inclined to have that sort of thing going on in your camp zone without spending a fortune....or your house for that matter. permit to burn

i went to the auburn fire department today and got myself a burn permit. i have heaps of brush and such in my upper yard waiting to have something done to it and some of it's a bit thick to have the chipper folks come. i hope this coming friday (4/4) will be a permissive burn day.

IF SO....i invite folks to come on over, starting around 3:30/4pm and going until just after sunset (you aren't "allowed" to burn after dusk). bring some beers, marshmallows, hot dogs...whatever you want to consume by the fire.

post burn, we could take it down to old town or something and continue, maybe to the inside of my house (all depends on if the new house mate has to work saturday or not).

i'll update this thread friday after i call the burn hotline...then i'll know if i can BURN or not.

I'll be 3.5 decades at the end of the month and would love it if my favorite foothill burners want to come celebrate with me.

The party will be at Alex's and my house (between Auburn and Grass Valley) during the day on March 29th. Festivities will start at 2pm and last into the evening/night.

We have a creek, chickens, a hot tub, and 5 acres with open spaces for poi, hoopin, etc so bring toys. We don't yet have a stripper pole, but that can be arranged. Costumes/Playa wear encouraged. The Rue Morgue and Temple of Community would like to offer you a challenge of a different ilk. Some of your crew may already be on this project but we'd like to see a represented piece from your camp.

When we found out that Best wasn't doing a temple this year we started to embark on creating one for the community that each camp could be part of.

We are building a 20 - 30 foot origami crane from wood to burn. It will a place of mourning, deep thought and release. To say goodbye to loved ones that have left this world.

We are asking various camps to build their own 5 foot version that can be placed next to the main structure in a circle to show that no mater how different we are together we are a community.

We will be happy to send you scaled down drawings but in the end its your art piece and we'd like you to make it yours. Use the skeleton as a base.

There are negatives as well as positives to the Playa, and you should know about them. Because it's only through clear-eyed assessment of the pros and cons of a situation that a wise, informed choice about attendance can be made.

So.

WHY YOU SHOULD NOT GO TO BURNING MAN.

1) THE PLACE NEVER SHUTS UP. Ever. So if you're a big fan of beauty sleep, it's very likely that you may not be happy alot of the time. On my first morning there one year, I was awoken by a guy on a bicycle with a megaphone, cycling through the 'quiet side of town' (a conceit which no longer exists, btw), who was shouting, at the top of his lungs, "EVERYONE SHUT THE FUCK UP. PEOPLE ARE TRYING TO SLEEP. DO *NOT* RUIN THEIR BURN BY BEING TOO LOUD. BE FUCKING QUIET!"

Doing the megaphone bit is important for many people's burning man experience. Complaining about them to rangers and police just isn't cool. So just suck it up.

Also, many camps on the Esplanade and on the end wings regard thumping loud dance music at all hours as a moral and artistic imperative. Learning to sleep 10' behind a sound system pounding out psytrance can be an exercise in patience that will test the Buddha.

2) YOUR SHIT WILL GET BROKEN. Try to remember that the more stuff you bring, the less of a chance that you will NOT experience breakage of said stuff.

The dust itself is a major irritant to equipment. For every 4 hours you spend planning your fairly complicated installation or prop-based immersive experience, you should spend 6 hours working out doable ways to protect your stuff. Do not underestimate the amount of effort it will take to shield your shit from the desert and from fucked-up people. (See below.)

If you are not prepared to do this, leave it at home. Nobody will miss it; there's too much stuff out there already.

3) THE WEATHER IS COMPLETELY UNPREDICTABLE. Rain? Sure. Snow? Check. Hail? Hell yeah. Cold? Hoo boy. 120 degree temperatures? w00t! Plan for any and all manner of bizarre weather events, and this should include 5 straight days of rain and cold or even absolutely staggeringly great weather for the entire event.

4) THE PLAYA BRINGS OUT THE BEST AND WORST IN PEOPLE, sometimes vacillating between the two in alarmingly short periods. Who are you camping with? I have dealt with numerous crises with people in my camps in the past five years, and I have some advice for you that you ignore at your own risk. This is worth a subsection.

4a) Does your camp have dues? Does your camp have responsibilities?
Do NOT invite people to stay in your camp unless they understand what those responsibilities will be. Many people regard Burning Man as one GIANT GODDAMN DOPE PARTY AND FUCKFEST, goddamit, and they will not be dissuaded in their determination to squeeze every second of dopin' and fuckin' out of the experience. Dishes? whatchutalkin'about, Willis? Gridding?? I got yer grid right here. Sometimes this approach to the playa is welcome, but will it be welcome in your camp?

4b) Short Attention Span Central. That's the Playa in a nutshell.
It’s hot and loud and nobody gets any sleep. Plus there are a lot of bright shiny things. We joke in my camp that people at burning man are like ferrets on crack, e.g.: 'ok, man, I’ll go get that ice. Gonna grab the wagon and the cooler and HOLY SHIT WILL YOU LOOK AT THAT, wow, what a fabulous looking SWING! hey, look at those people o my god what are they doing hee hee eeee wow that looks like fun, I love my new friends...' and before you know it, wagon's gone and it's been seven hours since you sent them to go get ice.

This is standard operating procedure. Get used to it; be forgiving when it happens, because it happens to the best of us. Can’t handle it? Stay home.

4c) Does everyone in your camp have a full history of mental stability?
Probably not. We’re all a bunch of freaks, and freak-outs are part of being freaks. That being said, nobody should be on the playa unless there is someone camped in close proximity that will be able to step up to the plate when things get rough for them.

Make no mistake- it's harsh out there. And that harshness can make you have a pretty bad time sometimes. Nothing wrong with it- it happens! It’s a natural result of the event. Everyone has moments of bad time out there. But you had better have someone who's more willing to sit in your tent and take care of you than run around like a ferret on crack.

Part of being in someone's camp is being part of their support network. Tell them to drink water. Tell them to calm down. Tell them to put on sunscreen. Help them take a break. If there is someone in your camp who does not have that kind of connection with any of you, they should not be in your camp, and you should not have invited them to join you.

4d) Special RV section: Take my advice. Please. Please, on this.
Don’t argue with me. Do NOT share an RV with someone you are not close to. Don’t do it. Money, issues of space, issues of boundaries, equipment issues, yadda yadda yadda. Not to mention the politics of the toilet. Just don't do it. It is BETTER TO SPEND A WEEK IN A DUSTY TENT THAN TO SPLIT AN RV WITH STRANGERS. I really cannot stress that enough.

5) DON'T FUCK WITH ANYONE'S BURN.
Everyone’s doing their own thing, and the beauty of this is that it gives you a chance to do the same. But if you can't do your thing without fucking with other people's things, you should seriously reconsider attending the event. Don’t tell people to stop dancing. Don’t bitch at people when the art is bad or gets in the way, or is offensive to you. Don’t tell off other burners because they're not doing it 'right'. Be open, and supportive, and curious, and encouraging. Even to the megaphone people, because inside every asshole with a bullhorn is a frightened puppy looking for love.

Can’t deal? Stay home. Fight the republicans. Watch the grass grow.

6) IT'S REALLY, REALLY, REALLY, REALLY, EXPENSIVE to attend the event. Even if you hitchhike out there and mooch off of other people's food, water and sunscreen, you still need to buy your ticket, and your shit will be broken and you'll need to fix it.

Is it really worth it for you to spend that kind of cash? You could buy a really nice computer, or some heirloom furniture, with the amount of money many people spend per person on Playa.
Think about it.

And finally...

7) DRUGS AND ALCOHOL. Sure, nobody in this tribe does drugs. And nobody we know does drugs. But they're there. And if you've got a problem with the presence of substances, this is not the event for you. Because even if your camp is a drug-free zone (as all of our camps are), you will still have to deal maturely and pleasantly with people who are indulging their little heads off. Also, you will see all manner of booze everywhere, and all manners of indulging that, too. People drink, they fight, they yell, they barf. There are times when Burning Man feels like one giant great big party. If that's not your scene, you'll feel a out of your element and you'll be miserable.
