Interesting topic of convo lately....

Just wondering from folks, with the recent rise in food costs, which I'm certain will only continue to rise....would anyone be interested in creating a local food co-op organization?

What I mean by this is, several families or individuals take care of their own food garden, each growing a variety of things. Family A would be growing a few different items than Family B. Family A and Family B would trade with each other the items the other one didn't have, and so on to to make each family have a wide variety of food to eat each week.

Of course it would take a few years to get a really good system in place, and a bunch of folks totally on board to do this, but I really feel with the rising costs of food and fuel, we need to start looking in this direction. Bananas are going to be $5/pound before we know it!

I am hella growing tomatoes and eggplant this summer. I need to get used to the climate here and what grows when, but I'm with you Elise. I am so over the cost of food. I am eating like crap because it cost so much. For fall crops I am taking out the whole rest of the backyard for a garden and some chickens. Hell I was even contemplating a small goat. Next year I am starting my plants from heirloom seed so I can save the seed for the following year.
I can totally plant a few extra plants to coordinate crops with people.
    We should meet.

      sweet mo!

i'm planning something similar here. i have my whole upper yard, about 1/8th acre, and will be putting beds in and hope to be finished by fall for some winter veggies. i currently only have some herbs and tomatoes and as with you, i'm trying to get used to this climate and it's growing season and cycles.

i'd love to have chickens, but i have to wait until jack is a little older.

anyone else interested? we could get a potluck dinner meeting together or something?

speaking of putting garden beds in...does anyone know of some free, decent lumber not being used right now? such as someone taking down an old deck, of which the wood is still decent that I could use for raised beds? please let me know if you have any leads. i'm trying to not go out and buy new wood for this project.

I think a summer garden needed to be planted a couple weeks ago so I'm a little behind to get in on this. I'll plant some things and see what comes up. I'm thinking of seeing if my neighbors will put up with some chickens squawking. Of course gas to get it to you will be more than they're worth but I can spare that for a good party down that way.

I have about 6 verities of tomatoes in this year. I also planted three different types of bell peppers and some chilies and hot peppers. Last year I grew a couple of different type of beans. I love all kinds of beans. I didn’t put them in this year since I may be moving.

I have trying to put my house up sale if my ex would corporate. As soon as the divorce is final I plan on buying another house. I have been looking at places with a big yard so continue my garden. I would like to get involved in something like this. I had chickens, cows, and pigs gowing up and we grew a majority of our own veggies. (YEP!, Farmer Bill from LA). I don't think I want to go that all out. It was alot of work. How do find out what you can have on a peice of property as far as the county zoning is concerned?

There again, the local food basket thing that Molly was doing last year was great to…

Let' s get a few more peeps on board and have that potluck.
I think you can still put in corn and probably tomatos and peppers and anything that will grow late into the season since our growing season is so long here. I've heard that you just keep planting corn for prolonged harvest, but not sure how far into the summer you can start it. This year is going to be a complete experiment, but I'm totally committed to the observation of my garden dynamics.
As for chickens, we too are going to wait until we can provide the right and safe environ. for them. Raccoons love to eat them up!!!!!
Do you know what animals are allowed in Auburn?

I think anyone's allowed to have chickens, but not roosters. Not Auburn specifically, but all over. I used to have chickens in a small movable pen, so it was small and strong and secure from critters, but it could be moved to new spots every day so they could get new stuff to dig at and look for bugs.

Has anyone seen that movie: The Real Dirt on Farmer John
It's pretty funny, and sad, and has a succesful community farm at the end.

I agree with Mo, let's get some more people on board and have a potluck to discuss the future of this. This summer none us would have planned in this so let's just use this time to chat and have get togethers to figure it out...plan =)

i tried looking up the ordinance for farm animals but searching online here at school isn't very good these days. i think in auburn city limits you can have chickens for sure and maybe one goat or something. i'm sure there's something on this site but couldn't find it:
            www.placer.ca.gov/

but i did find a master gardener composting class:
            ceplacer.ucdavis.edu/Gardeni...ning185/

as for the veggie box, that's a great idea..love it! but...it requires an exchange of money. i think having families grow certain veggies and then trade them is more about the barter system and creating community.

You can't have just one goat, they get lonely and let you know about it. Probably you can't really plan on what you'll have, different things do better in different places, even the same place different years, so if you plan on growning several things, one of them will probably have a bumper crop and then you know what you have to trade. I'll have more fun working in my garden knowing I can share stuff from it, and knowing I'll get to trade for other things too. I had way too many egg plants one year, it woulda been fun to turn them into something else!

Love it! A trading system would be great for motivation. Just make sure the goat doesn't get in the garden...

I called the city. Chickens are fine..BUT and this is major if you have a small lot.....they have to be greater than 25' from the property line!!!! That's like right in the middle of my house.
Lame!! I'm thinking of maybe doing it anyway.

Elise, I have redwood boards for raised beds you can have. Coordinate with Red to get them delivered. I'm down with all of this and have some experience. Elise I would be willing to help around your place or someone else's in Auburn, but don't have much dirt around mine. It's definitely not too late to start planting if you use transplants. A little late to direct seed summer crops. You can still plant corn, but it's tricky because it requires a large plot for successful pollination. I have had success with the dibble method. No land preparation, close mowing if you have grass or weeds. Soak the seeds overnight. Poke a hole in the ground, drop it in, cover, hope the birds don't find, interplant with squash and beans for the full three sisters garden. I'm up for getting together. Would host a potluck, BBQ, pool party or attend at someone else's. I'm a little laid up right now with a sprained knee, but would still love to participate to the extent possible.

I'd love for people to help out around here on big projects when more than one person is required...as well i'd love to help out on projects for others where help is needed, especially where new skills would be learned. we all have so much knowledge to share! hummm...does this sound amish or what? ;-)

oh yeah...and that film about farmer john is great! i love it when he and his girlfriend prance around in the bee costumes!

so far it looks like we have the following interested in a meeting:
                      elise
                      mo

I have a garden (Ted, who some of you met at my birthday, is the master gardner and also involved) and actually and I'm having a helluva time with the gophers, who only seem to show up to eat the tomatoes that are a minimum up 3 feet tall. They hit that height and the next morning they are lying prone no longer possessing a root sytem.

Anyway, I am very frustrated with them and have been trying to figure something out.
